Even though Im submitting this after I've completed my project of creating a new library space, seeing the past winners and their work is amazing. Although many schools that compete in this competition are mainly concentrated on art and specifically architecture it's still amazing to see what kids my age can construct and think of. I couldnt select one student I thought was the best because to me most of them, even the runner-ups and ones that didn't win were really cool. All the different shapes, design, and use of space that students created are wonderful and bright. I definitely wish I looked at this before I started so I could maybe steal a couple of ideas from them but I'm proud of what I created and what my library turned out to be. I bet the winners this year will be even cooler than the past years. Im not expecting to win or anything but I had a great time doing this project and  
 
 
 
 
 
 
I got a lot of my inspiration from the new library that was built in my town's middle school. We took a 45 minute field trip to the school and toured the space. I was extremely impressed as to how much better the space felt, compared to the high school library. No sound echoed, everything was open, natural light was let in and could be felt all around the room, and tv's and outlets were places around the room for kids to use. What surprised me the most was that after visiting the middle school, I no longer consider the high school library to be a library. To me it feels more like a cafeteria, where noise can bounce around and areas can become extremely crowded. Overall im glad I was able to tour this space because now my final design 
 
 
My library will tackle many problems that I feel my current high school library suffers from. This includes echoing, lack of open space, poor book placement, as well as lack of natural light. To solve these problems my library design will have a much more open vibe to it. I will place bookshelves against the walls to open up the center of the room. At the center I will place a service area, where the librarian can monitor the rest of the library and see every corner of the room. Around the service area I will place tables and chairs for students and classes that will use the library for research and books. At the far end of the library there will be a giant window that will let in a lot of natural light. For students there to study or work in groups there will be rounded tables and chairs located in a section adjacent to the window. To tackle the sound issue I will place a glass wall separating the two study areas minimizing sound while also spreading the natural light all the way to the back end of the room. Included near tables and chairs will be pillars and outlets allowing for students to charge their devices. Located to the left and right will be two isolated rooms where the computer labs will be placed. Teachers can reserve this area, or if not used students can sign in to use a computer if they want. On the second floor the layout will be exactly the same, except there will be more area for sitting and less for bookshelves. The second floor is mainly a hangout area/relaxing area. Where the main service area is located on the first instead om the second floor there will be a cafe where coffee and other food/beverages will be sold. Students can eat and talk in tables and chairs located around the center of the room. Where the window and glass wall is is where I will place comfortable chairs and couches for lounging and talking. Located in two rooms to the left and right will be two rooms that teachers can reserve or that can be used for tutoring and extra help.

Our classroom assignment was to create a cardboard room fully made out of cardboard furniture that could be used and withstand normal use. Every group was assigned a different task, which was to create a different type of furniture to add to the room. My group consisted of Alex and Paul. We chose to design a coffee table for the room. Although we thought we had a clear picture of what we wanted to create, many times it wasnt fit to Ms. Chang's liking, our Intro to Architecture teacher. She wanted us to think outside the "cardboard box" and try to design something that was unique and different from your average everyday coffee table. We went through many designs and trial and error. Designs such as honey comb shapes, interlocking shapes, and rounded top, and a regular coffee table with 4 legs. We continued to work, on what we thought would be a relatively quick and easy project, for a little over a month. To tell you the truth this project became more and more tedious and we struggled to find a design that wouldn't bend or break and, of course, one that was unique. In the end we put together interlocking cardboard pieces that would slide together to stand up. Although we thought this would work the pieces would bend and the cardboard was unable to hold it's own weight. Instead, we flipped it on its side and placed a piece of cardboard on the top. Finally we cut the edges of the top piece to fit the edges of the main structure of the table and connected it with tabs. Although this wasn't even close to what we thought we coiu

After many weeks working endlessly to meet deadlines and requirements we finally completed our class goal of creating a cardboard room.
